2017 Transfers!!

I know it's only March 14th and the NCAA tournament hasn't even started yet, but some colleges had their seasons come to an end last week, so transfer(or is it free agency!!) season is underway. Verbal Commits already has it's 2017 list out, the list includes 6 players who announced they are transferring within the last 24 hours. An interesting name on the list is Georgetown's Trey Mourning, he's the son of NBA and Georgetown great Alonzo Mourning. Will Alonzo have any hard feelings towards Georgetown over this? There is also Nebraska forward Nick Fuller who announced he's leaving the program, he'll graduate in May and will be eligible to play next year.

maine colonial3/14/2017 9:01:44 AM

More immediately eligible Ivy League graduate students, please.

ziik the tentmaker3/14/2017 9:47:05 AM

The Duquesne roster will get a shake up.

thomas3/14/2017 10:53:28 AM

Ziik,  I'm glad you brought that up because it hasn't been mentioned here yet. For those of you who don't know, Duquesne fired it's coach yesterday. So there are now 2 job openings in the A10

Maine Colonial,  there's actually another Ivy League grad transfer available again this year, he's Henry Caruso from Princeton. He's probably visited GW already and has had conversations with Steeves and Mitola about GW's grad programs!! HA!

thinker3/14/2017 10:58:40 AM

Don't forget that transfers often go to schools that recruited them previously or to coaches that they had a prior relationship or connection with.

I believe that Strickland and Sutton had some type of relationships with Armwood and Creek. ML had a long relationship with Cavanaugh and he had recruited Sina who played HS ball with Mitola and I recall ML had some relationship with Sina's dad - his coach.

I don't know about Steeves.

bm3/14/2017 12:01:42 PM

Another transfer name is Khris Lane from LongwoodWe recruited him out of HS.  Averaged 17 & 7 as a 6'6" PF.

On Duquesne, they also announced a major refurb of their arena and there are rumors of a $1m package for the new hire.  Apparently the new AD finally understands.

maine colonial3/14/2017 12:47:33 PM

Princeton would work. Does Caruso still have eligibility left if he played 8 games this season? He's no longer listed on the Princeton team roster even though he's in the team photo. LINK  His teammate Hans Brase is graduating in the spring and he definitely has eligibility left. LINK  LINK

pembo3/14/2017 6:14:52 PM

GW recruited Rene Castro of Duquesne (and before that Butler), I believe.  However, I'm not sure he's someone we want at this juncture.

ziik3/14/2017 6:32:29 PM

Castro will spend more time sitting out than playing, the way he has turned out. Not an ML winner

thomas3/14/2017 7:05:08 PM

Another local player just appeared on the transfer list, Pittsburgh power forward Corey Manigault from Paul VI announced he's transferring. He was recruited by BCS schools in high school, but barely played last year at Pittsburgh.

thomas3/14/2017 7:12:12 PM

I forgot to add that Manigault was a freshman(class of 2016) this year and would have 3 years of eligibility left.

thinker3/14/2017 7:31:30 PM

You can't transfer within the A-10 - Remember the Trey Davis Rule

mike k3/14/2017 7:38:06 PM

I thought if you transfer within the same conference you had to sit 2 years, which effectively rules it out.

bigfan3/14/2017 7:58:23 PM

Yeah,we screwed the pooch on that one.

Like Paul VI recruit in general. Don't know about this one in specific or if we need a PF. Depends on transfers, or how desirable he is.

bm3/22/2017 5:05:33 PM

Marial Shayok from UVA is leaving.  Sit one year, play one year schedule.  Averaged 9ppg as a junior.  Canadian.

2twotoed3/22/2017 5:07:38 PM

UVA big Reuter is leaving also. He would really help GW.

ziik3/22/2017 5:32:43 PM

GW should get every non-Gonzaga Canadian. The Canadiens, too.

thomas3/22/2017 5:58:01 PM

Marial Shayok leaving Virginia is surprising to me because he would've been one of their best players next year. The only concern I'd have is, why is a really talented and productive player transferring out? What's the issue? If Mojo has any sort of ties with Shayok, he should definitely try to bring him to GW because of his talent level.

notta hater3/22/2017 6:08:54 PM

Blair Academy - not too shabby ...

the dude3/22/2017 7:53:54 PM

Agreed Thomas, very talented player.

Fact is, Canada for some reason (anyone know why?) has in the last few years become a major factory of good Hoops players.  Good news for GW. We don't need every Canadian/Int'l, we need a few, which would be a lot better than more American HS guys that chose GW over low majors.

bigfan3/22/2017 11:05:54 PM

Well Mojo gets a pass on Longpire (sp?) because of the weird circumstances of his visit.

Who knows whether we would have signed him or how he will pan out, but seemed sought after,at least at our level.

But sure hope Mojo can compete for top Canadian players.

ziik3/23/2017 12:12:30 PM

Chase Jeter, Duke

dmvpiranha3/23/2017 6:51:42 PM

Apparently we're one of several programs who have reached out to former UVA player Jarred Reuter. Would be a nice get for us.

yawle3/23/2017 7:55:00 PM

what about Darius Thompson.  that would be a perfect fit

bm3/24/2017 9:45:24 AM

Ouch.  Sengfelder leaving Fordham.

gw05093/24/2017 10:23:16 AM

I don't want to get my hopes up too much, but with 3 open scholarships now, I really hope we can nab some quality transfers.

front row center3/24/2017 10:37:44 AM

It's time now to see what kind of recruiter MoJo is. Losing a lot of talent for next year so far. Hopefully the talented underclassmen don't decide to leave.  We could use a nice grad student scorer to ease the young guys in.

thomas3/24/2017 10:50:46 AM

Front Row Center and GW0509, I agree with you guys!! Every hour(it seems) we are seeing quality players announcing that they are transferring, it's time for Mojo to go to work. Someone mentioned that GW is one of the schools interested in Virginia's Jarred Reuter. Jarred Reuter is listed at 6-7 and 243 pounds, sounds like slightly undersized power forward and I saw he went to Brewster Academy, which is a big-time basketball factory school. Anyone familiar with his game??

Another local guy who announced that he was transferring who I overlooked is Farleigh Dickinson guard Stephan Jiggetts who attended McNamara, he has graduated and can play next year. He was Farleigh Dickinson's 2nd leading scorer last year averaging around 11 or 12PPG.

maine colonial3/24/2017 1:02:52 PM

So far about 202 guys are on the transfer list meaning another 600 will be adding their names to the list at some point. At least 500 of the 800 players will be immediately eligible so MoJo has a good chance of bringing in some quality transfers.

b loud3/24/2017 1:09:23 PM

6'10" Kerem Kanter (brother of Enas), grad transfer Green Bay, immediately eligble.   11.3 ppg and 6.3 rpg in only 19 minutes.

pj3/24/2017 1:11:07 PM

Plenty of chances to improve upon departing ML mistakes

long suffering fan3/24/2017 1:39:25 PM

You mean the same departing mistakes that brought GW 95 wins over the last 4 seasons?

mg143/24/2017 2:36:33 PM

Duquesne freshman Mike Lewis has asked for his release to transfer, per his twitter page. Averaged 14.1 PPG. Should have high-major suitors.

mg143/24/2017 4:41:00 PM

Rutgers redshirt junior guard Nigel Johnson will be a grad transfer. Started career at K-State.

mike k3/24/2017 4:44:00 PM

NIGEL!  Oh boy, there is one guy we won't go after.

gw05093/24/2017 4:51:24 PM

When you transfer three times in college, maybe the issue isn't "them"

boom3/24/2017 5:20:55 PM

Jaren Sina left four teams

thomas3/24/2017 5:46:59 PM

What a journey it's been for Nigel since his senior of high school in 2012!!! He signed with Kansas State because it was a BCS school, he left for Rutgers because he wanted more playing time and stats, what's he looking for now?? If he transfers to a BCS school, he's going to have the same role he had at Kansas State which is scoring off the bench in limited minutes. Maybe he goes to Iona where he can chuck up a lot of shots and be a favorite to win the MAAC. Iona likes bringing in BCS players like Nigel.

ziik3/24/2017 5:54:52 PM

Maybe he wants to be a travel agent.

colonial ny3/24/2017 5:55:33 PM

Can Nigel slash to the basket, create his own shot and make shots on a relatively consistent basis? We can't rule out anyone at this point who could help the team next year.

thomas3/24/2017 7:05:09 PM

Colonial NY,  Nigel actually would be a good fit for next year's team when you look at how unproven the backcourt will be next year. I mean, the starting backcourt will probably be Jair Bolden and Jordan Roland. I'm not sure that either side would be interested at this point though. Also when you look at the terrible state Georgetown is now in, Nigel could probably be a starter there too

bigfan3/24/2017 11:24:05 PM

Willing to concede Nigel and his honesty and loyalty to the school down the street, not here. Perfect fit for Daddy if he keeps meddling.

Now, what's wrong with being at Rutgers. At this point, Nigel's not fit to sellpopcorn at the Smith Center (apology to popcorn purveyors).

thunderdome3/25/2017 8:15:30 AM

Bigfan has it right. Run don't walk from Nigel.

tennessee colonial3/25/2017 8:40:43 AM

Please don't mention that persons name again.

thomas3/28/2017 2:24:38 PM

Duke center Sean Obi is transferring, he's graduated and will be eligible to play next year. I believe we discussed his transfer from Rice in 2014 in our transfer thread for that offseason. He had a great freshman year at Rice, transferred to Duke where he's been sitting on the bench for the last 2 years. I've watched Duke a lot and I don't think I've ever seen him get on the court for them. As a freshman at Rice, he was a tremendous defensive presence with his rebounding and shot-blocking.

the dude3/28/2017 2:45:06 PM

Coach K took a great player from a mid major and wasted his career needlessly sitting all game on the Duke bench? I'm shocked to learn this

the dude3/28/2017 2:57:31 PM

Thomas am I reading this right, Obi after scoring 11.5 and 9.5 boards 3 years ago at Rice, was convinced by Coach K to transfer to  Duke, had to sit out a season, and then in two year at Duke played a total of 27 minutes, making 1 FG? Did not play a single minute this season?

thomas3/28/2017 3:15:52 PM

As a freshman at Rice in 2013-2014, Obi averaged 11.4Pts/9.3Rebs/0.7Blks, he had to be on the radar of NBA scouts. At Duke, he averaged 3 minutes per game in 2015-2016 and actually didn't accumulate any stats this past season. Was he hurt this past season? Is it possible that he could have 2 more years of eligibility?

thomas3/28/2017 3:30:44 PM

The Dude,  I didn't see your last post before hitting reply. When Obi became eligible in 2015-2016, I was checking to see what he would do because I thought he'd be a starter or at least be in the rotation because of how well he played at Rice, when he didn't play I thought he was hurt. I'm hoping Obi had an injury this past season which earned him ZERO minutes, he couldn't have been that bad!! It looks like Coach K used the "bright lights" of Cameron Indoor/the Duke mystique/the ACC to sign him and then immediately started to recruit over him. At least Obi will be well rested for his next school, if he can get an extra year of eligibility, Mojo and his staff needs to recruit him right now!!

I can think of 2 guys off the top of my head who barely got off the bench at Duke, transferred to other schools and became great players. One is Michael Gbinije who went to Syracuse, and the other played at  SMU this past season(Semi??), and was a dominant player.

the dude3/28/2017 3:31:18 PM

It appears he did have some injuries, but it also appears that when healthy he barely played.  K has recruited 5 star McD's All Americans who barely play. But taking a guy from a mid-major who was really thriving and having him ride the pine as some sort of insurance policy, typical unethical behavior from the self annointed Patrion Saint of college hoops.

Semi Ojele, in 2 years at Duke also barely played.

Makes losing in rounds 1 and 2 with all of this talent all the more amazing. Instant Karma too.

ziik3/28/2017 3:34:53 PM

Sean Obi cannot pass the ball out, is what I hvae heard. Anyway, its a rumor I am starting

There has to be a reason why Coach K sours on a guy. He's like Jesus.

the dude3/28/2017 3:59:08 PM

A Jesus, at least in his own mind Ziik. Greater than Jesus actually. The father and the holy ghost too.

Ditto! K's gameplan is to stockpile guys under false promises as insurance policies. Its pretty bad for HS recruits, but when you have a guy who is starring at another program, and then convince him to sit out a year to come to Duke, and he's just there as deep bench, that's a new low.

Semi as you said, a DOMINANT player.  6-8 235 block of granite and 44% 3 point shooter.  K couldn't play a guy like that but Grayson gets 33 minutes a night?

If you have guys like that wasting away on your bench who don't even see the court for you, you think you could avoid to losing in rounds 1 and 2 of the NCAA tourney to teams like Lehigh and Mercer.

bo knows3/28/2017 4:20:14 PM

I am betting somewhere in the not too distant past Coach K must have had the misfortune of being subjected to the Dude's basketball acumen. I would imagine like most he didn't react well.

Criticizing Coach K and promoting Mark Few as America's greatest coach regardless of one's dislike for Duke is straight comedy gold.

thomas3/28/2017 6:48:47 PM

Howard guard James Daniel announced that he will transfer from Howard, he will graduate in a few weeks and will be eligible to play next year. Some of you may remember we talked about him when previewing the Howard-GW game from early in the year, he was first or second in the nation in scoring as a junior at about 27PPG. He suffered a foot injury before the season and only played in 2 or 3 games which allowed him to redshirt. A statement was released saying he wanted to play at the BCS level, it will be interesting to see where he ends up and how much he'll be able to score against better competition.

the dude3/28/2017 7:30:13 PM

How about to GW?

thomas4/6/2017 5:30:05 PM

Another local player has announced he is transferring, this time it's Georgia Tech freshman Christian Matthews. He went to National Christian Academy(I think) and was a 1st Team All-Met last year. He's about 6-7 and very athletic. He didn't get a lot of playing time for Georgia Tech this year.

bigfan4/6/2017 7:17:10 PM

We should heavily go after the player from Howard, after seeing how he did against bigger teams.

Worth a shot for a scorer because we don't have any, except  Yuta who is not a consistent high scorer, possibly because of his terrific defense.

shufan4/8/2017 1:40:12 PM

Sorry to hear about these recent transfers.  As a Seton Hall fan I know they're never fun.  I was wondering if anyone had any insight they could share on Kevin MArfo.  I saw he had an on court incident and then never played in another game.  Was this an isolated thing, or were there other issues?

herve4/8/2017 3:13:27 PM

Marfo is NOT a behavior problem and a very supportive teammate. That was not the issue. Honestly, we don't really know why he stopped getting any playing time, but was always very engaged on the bench.

gw alum abroad4/8/2017 3:19:40 PM

Marfo's worst behaviour was accumulating (seemingly) more fouls and turnovers that points, assists, rebounds or (at the end of the season) playing time.

By all accounts he is a dedicated hard worker and good teammate.

ziik4/8/2017 4:10:09 PM

Nothing related to point shaving? Cause, he only had that one game...

Nebraska transfer forward Jeriah Horne will take an official visit to George Washington this weekend, per source

thomas4/10/2017 1:02:24 PM

I'll put this here for now and maybe we can add it to 'New Recruits' section since Jeriah Horne will be visiting GW, but I found a youtube video of his highlights at Nebraska last year as a freshman. He'll have to sit out next year and have 3 years of eligibility. From this video, he can knock down 3's and is good at slashing to the basket.

gw694/10/2017 1:11:11 PM

3 star --43rd at PF his year. where is Baccas?

thomas4/10/2017 1:30:20 PM

Upon further review, I'm seeing that the guy who made the highlight video of Jeriah Horne, has also made video highlights for a whole lot of 2017 transfers and JUCO players. I posted his youtube page down below with all of his videos. I've also posted the highlight video for Stephan Jiggetts who listed GW among his list of schools he's considering transferring to. I know it's just highlights, but I like what Jiggetts game a lot. If GW lands him, I think he'll be an upgrade from the two guards who left GW!! This guy put up a video for Marfo too!!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KhUHurE_36M   Stephan Jiggetts

GW69,  I believe Baccas wanted GW to sign these highly rated guys directly out of high school, not as transfers!!

the dude4/10/2017 5:00:19 PM

Thomas, agreed! and thx for posting these

mg144/11/2017 11:27:52 AM

Rene Castro transferring from Duquesne. Originally went to Butler, transferrerd to Duquesne. We recruited him a few years ago.

thomas4/12/2017 7:46:16 AM

Another local player has transferred, Texas Southern guard Jerron Martin who has graduated and can play next year. He's a good shooter and pretty quick, he signed with Ole Miss out of high school and barely played, he then transferred to Texas Southern and barely played there too. The fact that he couldn't get a lot of playing time at an SEC and SWAC school probably means that he's not quite good enough to thrive at GW/the A-10, but GW could use just about any decent scholarship player at this player at this point, especially a guard who was good enough to sign with Ole Miss out of high school.

bigfan4/12/2017 11:07:31 AM

Good find.

But maybe as a walkon. If you can't play at Texas Southern (or even Ole Miss), then

not worth a scholarship unless we are really desperate.

Though we may be really desperate.

bo knows4/12/2017 11:10:50 AM

Pass. We are involved with better players.

jammer4/12/2017 12:58:47 PM

Marfo barely played and people treated his departure as the apocalypse

gw05094/12/2017 2:38:57 PM

William & Mary grad transfer Jack Whitman tells me he plans to visit George Washington and Clemson. Immediately eligible.

the mv4/12/2017 2:50:16 PM

That's right Jammer because if you can't put up decent numbers by the end of your freshman year, there's no real shot at improving, right?  I guess that's why Kevin is making an official visit to Seton Hall next week.  So that he can waste their time, the same way that PJ wasted Butler's time.

For every High Flyer and Invictus that comes and goes, along comes a Jammer and a Lurker to take their place.

gw alum abroad4/12/2017 2:55:55 PM

At this point, shouldn't GW be chasing after every academically elligible person with a measurable pulse (even if it is only because of the life support machines)?

2twotoed4/12/2017 3:05:31 PM

I wonder how many posters actually attend games. Marfo may have not had a good freshman year but he had a skill set that most schools would want. No denying he was raw but he was tough and will be a very solid rebounder for the next school. PJ leaving was another real shame. He may be a work in progress but he could beat his man off the dribble and I believe has a huge upside. Now we are talking about taking a grad student from William  and Mary. Nice player but not elite A 10 player. Ivy transfers and William and Mary grads don't win in our league.

cocolonial4/12/2017 3:12:27 PM

As someone who did go to almost every home game, I seemed to be observing a very different Marfo than you. While I personally liked his defense and rebounding, his offensive skills were atrocious and his jump shot is incredibly broken. It would be very hard to make him passable on offense as he either turned it over via getting it stolen or traveled, and he never ever passed it out which was so frustrating. My view of his upside was a high energy defender and rebounder while on offense he goes for screens (which he didn't seem to do much) and boards -  nice skills but he was never going to be a starter while Toro and Smith were here.

the dude4/12/2017 3:12:50 PM

This is good news.  Ivy transfers Mitola and Steeves did rather nicely for GW.  GW and Clemson, an ACC, NCAA tourney bubble school are the programs Whitman is visiting, sounds good to me.

Marfo is visiting Quinnipiac. That should tell you something as well.

bo knows4/12/2017 3:47:34 PM

To be fair Dude Marfo also visited Seton Hall. I think he is more Quinnipiac than Seton Hall but for context you need to be fair.

boom4/12/2017 9:08:04 PM

A GW fan thinks Ivy players can't cut it in the A10?  Either you have amnesia or you are an agenda based griper having read your other entries I would suggest the latter. Surely not an honest GW fan

2twotoed4/12/2017 9:23:50 PM

I have nothing against the Ivy League. GW has gotten some nice complimentary players from there. However, to compete consistently at the top level of the A 10 we need better athletes. Don't take it personal, just my opinion. By the way I've been a fan since the 70's.

boom4/12/2017 9:35:38 PM

Sorry perhaps I misread the intent of your post. I surely agree we need better athletes. But at the moment we need better players and it seems strange to hammer a guy coveted by a good ACC Program. This guy actually is rather athletic for a big.

2twotoed4/12/2017 9:42:25 PM

Not a problem. He's a nice player. I've seen him play several times. No doubt we need players. We really a slashing 3 and a big guard that can play some D. He'd help but we need more.

boom4/12/2017 9:57:37 PM

No doubt about that, we agree it turns out. Those are things I say a lot here.

But one thing is for certain...if we violated CARA, whatever that is, I am sure it is Mike Lonergan's doing.

a new fan4/17/2017 10:52:12 PM

The NCAA mandates that when in season, each athlete can devote a maximum of four CARA, or Countable Athletically Related Activity, hours per day and 20 hours per week with one required day off. These hours are defined as the hours that the coach requires or monitors attendance. The coach does not have to be present for these hours to count.
